Our verdict

Happn's gimmick is also its charm: it shows you people you have physically crossed paths with during the day, turning your real commute, gym and coffee runs into a dating feed. In dense, walkable cities — Paris, where it was born, plus NYC, London and Berlin — that produces a genuinely fun, serendipitous experience with a built-in opener ("we keep crossing paths"). Outside big metros it falls apart: in suburban and rural areas you simply do not cross enough people for the model to work, and the always-on location raises real privacy questions. A delightful secondary app if you live somewhere dense; skip it otherwise.

Happn uses your phone's location in the background to log, roughly, where you have been. When another user passes within about 250 metres of you around the same time, their profile surfaces on your timeline; if you both like each other, you match and can chat. You can also send a "Hi" (FlashNote) or a Charm to get noticed. The free tier lets you see who you have crossed paths with and like profiles, while Premium unlocks messaging anyone, seeing who liked you, and extra Charms. The entire experience hinges on real-world movement, so it rewards living an out-and-about urban life.

Happn never shows your exact location or real-time position — it only reveals that you crossed paths in an area, and it offers granular controls plus the ability to hide from or block specific users. Photo verification and in-app reporting are available.
