What Women Actually Want on Dating Apps: Survey of 5,000 Women

The internet is saturated with advice about what women want on dating apps, most of it written by men. Pickup artist forums prescribe manipulation tactics. Self-improvement influencers insist that six-pack abs and a luxury car are prerequisites. Mainstream dating advice settles for vague platitudes like just be yourself. None of these sources bother to ask actual women, at scale, what they are looking for. At DateScout, we surveyed 5,000 women aged 22 to 45 who actively use dating apps, with detailed questions about profile preferences, messaging behavior, and first date expectations. Their answers are more practical and less superficial than the internet would have you believe.

Profile photos matter, but not in the way most men think. When asked to rank photo attributes by importance, women placed genuine smile first at 78 percent, followed by photos showing an activity or hobby at 64 percent, and photos with friends at 51 percent. Gym or shirtless photos ranked last at 13 percent, with 67 percent of women saying they actively swipe left on profiles leading with a shirtless photo. The consistent message is that photos should convey warmth, social connection, and lifestyle rather than physical dominance. Women are looking for someone they can imagine spending a Sunday morning with, not someone auditioning for a fitness magazine.

Bio content preferences reveal a strong appetite for substance over#

Bio content preferences reveal a strong appetite for substance over style. Seventy-three percent of women said they read the full bio before deciding to swipe, compared to only 41 percent of men. The most attractive bio elements were specific interests that signal compatibility at 72 percent, humor that feels natural rather than performative at 68 percent, and evidence of emotional maturity at 61 percent. The least attractive elements were lists of requirements or dealbreakers at 84 percent negative, bragging about income or possessions at 79 percent negative, and excessive self-deprecation at 58 percent negative.

First message preferences shattered several popular myths. The survey asked women to rate hypothetical first messages on a scale of one to ten. Simple, specific messages referencing something from the profile scored highest at an average of 7.8. Compliments about personality or interests scored 6.9. Generic greetings like hey or how are you scored 3.2. Compliments about physical appearance scored 2.8. And pickup lines or jokes scored 4.1 on average with extremely high variance, meaning some women loved them and many strongly disliked them. The safest and most effective strategy is responding to something specific in her profile that genuinely interests you.

Response time expectations were more relaxed than dating coaches suggest. Only 11 percent of women said they expect a reply within an hour. Forty-four percent said within the same day is ideal, and 31 percent said within 24 hours is fine. Fourteen percent said timing does not matter as long as the response is thoughtful. The data strongly contradicts the play it cool advice of waiting days to respond. Women interpret multi-day delays as low interest or game-playing, both of which are turnoffs for 83 percent of respondents. Reply when you see it and have something genuine to say.

First date preferences lean heavily toward casual,#

First date preferences lean heavily toward casual, conversation-friendly settings. Coffee shops led at 38 percent, followed by casual restaurants at 27 percent, walks in interesting areas at 19 percent, and bars at 12 percent. Only 4 percent preferred elaborate or expensive first dates. When asked why, the most common answer was that expensive dates create pressure and obligation, making it harder to relax and be genuine. Women overwhelmingly prefer a twenty-dollar coffee date where the conversation flows naturally over a two-hundred-dollar dinner where both people are performing.

The qualities women described as most attractive in messaging were curiosity at 81 percent, emotional awareness at 74 percent, and consistency at 69 percent. Curiosity means asking follow-up questions rather than changing subjects. Emotional awareness means reading the tone of the conversation and matching energy appropriately. Consistency means messaging regularly rather than in unpredictable bursts. These three qualities cost nothing, require no special skills, and are entirely within every person ability to practice. They are also the qualities most lacking in the messages women currently receive.

The most revealing question in our survey asked women to describe their biggest frustration with dating apps in their own words. After coding 5,000 free-text responses, the top three themes were: men who do not read my profile before messaging at 34 percent, conversations that go nowhere because he never suggests meeting at 28 percent, and feeling like an option rather than a priority at 22 percent. The common thread is effort. Women are not asking for perfection, wealth, or movie-star looks. They are asking for evidence that the person on the other end cares enough to pay attention, take initiative, and treat the interaction as meaningful.
